A SUSSEX KOI POND

  • 9 metres x 4 metres overall, including integral filter.
  • Main pond 2 metres deep.
  • Approximately 55,000 litres.

ConstructionSteel reinforced concrete blockwork, rendered. Brick and flint facing, stone capping. Fibreglass lined.

This pond was constructed along the lines of a swimming pool, ie with a reinforced concrete base and with reinforced concrete block walls, and was rendered to provide a flat surface for the fibreglass. For fibreglass lined ponds and pools it is not essential to put reinforcement in the render, but it's a good idea to use a waterproofing agent to prevent too much fibreglass resin absorption. The external corners within the pond were given a slight radius so that the fibreglass sits properly, and the surfaces were checked to make sure that they were free from sharp projections and lumps which may have punctured the fibreglass when applied. When all the structural work was completed, the render was allowed to dry out completely and a tent was put over the pond to protect the render from further water absorption and to keep the fibreglass dry until it had cured. This pond has a complex integrated filter system which was only feasible with a fibreglass lining, which has produced a totally waterproof durable finish. We chose a dark green colour gel coat for this pond to show off the colours of the Koi carp, but virtually any colour is achievable.
